When Viktor and Romulus, two peasant boys, dig too deep into their town’s strange past, they awaken the wrath of a mysterious overlord. As the blood brothers struggle to survive, their search for answers takes them through gambling parlors, bare-knuckle boxing matches, and dark forests full of wild animals and men alike. But even with the help of their friends, can they escape the deathly experiments their foe is creating in Staryi Castle?

Enter the bold lands of the Russian Empire where the colorful characters of The Card Game dwell, from the fortune-tellers and fire-jugglers of the Romani Gypsies, to the dangerous criminals that make up the Thieves World, the predecessor of the Russian Mafia.

An explosive mixture of adventure and mystery, The Silent Deal is a young adult novel that will rip readers through the pages. A perilous journey awaits…

There is nothing I love more than following along with a quirky, young male character. So of course when I was offered the prospect of two, both Viktor and Romulus, I was quickly taken in! Levi Stack’s The Silent Deal drew me in with promises of wild brawls and adventure. Then it delivered on those promises. Between these pages is a phenomenal story!
Viktor and Romulus are such amazing boys. Their tale takes them through some crazy places, and yet they handle it all in stride. Romulus is level-headed and thoughtful. Viktor is wild and impetuous. Needles to say that these two keep things running with their dialogue and development. It’s hard not to become utterly invested in these characters. Although Viktor was absolutely my favorite (and who can blame me, what with his wit), both of these boys shine off the page. I was rooting for them, and it kept me reading at a feverish pace.
Plot wise, The Silent Deal is very well done. This story is vast. I wasn’t always sure where the world Viktor and Romulus stood. Not always sure if it was magic or science at work. However I quickly found that I didn’t really care either way. The adventures that these boys embark on are wild, imaginative, and utterly engrossing. The mystery plot is definitely what drives this book and it makes it hard to put down.
Needless to say, this is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed! I’m rather sad it took me so long to pick up The Silent Deal, but I’m so happy that I finally did get the chance to dive in. All I can say is more please! I can’t wait to find out what happens to Viktor and Romulus next.
