It's time for another author spotlight! I can't express enough how much I love hosting these! Getting the chance to get to know an author is a ton of fun for me. It never gets old!
This time the spotlight is on Laekan Zea Kemp, and her book The Girl In Between.

Bryn Reyes is a real life sleeping beauty. Afflicted with Klein-Levin Syndrome, she suffers episodes of prolonged sleep that steal weeks, and sometimes even months, from her life. But unlike most KLS patients, she doesn’t spend each episode in a catatonic state or wake up with no recollection of the time she’s missed. Instead, Bryn spends half her life in an alternate reality made up of her memories. For Bryn, the past is a place, until one day a boy she’s never met before washes up on the illusory beach of her dreams with no memory of who he is.
But the appearance of this strange boy isn’t the only thing that’s changed. Bryn’s symptoms are worsening, her body weakening as she’s plagued by hallucinations even while awake. Her only hope of finding a cure is to undergo experimental treatment created by a German specialist. But when Dr. Banz reveals that he knows more about her strange symptoms than he originally let on, Bryn learns that the boy in her head might actually be the key to understanding what’s happening to her, and worse, that if she doesn’t find out his identity before it’s too late, they both may not survive.
If you're looking to add this book to your TBR, I don't blame you! Now please enjoy Lakean's wonderful answers to the interview questions I sent her. Make sure to scroll to the bottom for her contact info and, as always, feel free to leave a comment! Happy reading!
One thing I absolutely can't live without is now & laters.
If I'm reading, you'll usually find me in my pajamas.
Contemporary YA is my go-to genre.
A book that I can read over and over is the entire Lumatere Chronicles series.
If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be curious.
2) I noticed in your bio that you grew up in West Texas! What was your favorite part about living there?
The city I grew up in was fairly small and just the ideal community to raise a family. I love all of the memories I have of just playing outside and all of the kids in my neighborhood converging on the playground after school. Through playing sports and doing other school activities I knew people from every school and every neighborhood and it's that sense of community that I really miss. I've lived in Orlando and Dallas since then and there's just this unavoidable loneliness that comes along with living in a big city, which just makes me greater appreciate the amazing childhood I got to have.
3) When did you first know that you wanted to be an author?
My entire high school career I thought I was going to major in social work or journalism and save the world but midway through my senior year I had a mild crisis of spirit and realized that I really wanted to be an artist. I'd always loved to read and spent more time with books than people and even though I'd always glamorized the idea of being a writer I'd never actually attempted it. I'd written short stories and really terrible poetry but making the decision to major in Creative Writing was the real turning point for me.
4) Go ahead and give us your best tweet (140 character) pitch for The Girl In Between!
Yikes! Okay...The Girl In Between is about a girl with a neurological disorder who learns that the line between dream & reality is blurred & dangerous.
5) Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I just want to say thank you to Jessica for putting this spotlight together and a HUGE thank you to all of the readers out there who have taken a chance on my books. I really appreciate all of the amazing bloggers and readers who have helped me with this blog tour and can't tell you how much it means to me that I've been embraced by this amazing community!
I’m a writer and explorer extraordinaire and author of the multi-cultural New Adult novels The Things They Didn’t Bury, Orphans of Paradise, Breathing Ghosts, and the upcoming The Girl In Between, the first in my new Young Adult paranormal series!
